Subliminal Messages, And How They Are Affecting You

Human Psychology works in wondrous ways, and most times- in methods easy to succumb to and peculiar to understand. One such instance is the theory of sending Subliminal and Supraliminal message to the human brain and how it reacts to it.

While supraliminal message deals with exaggerating and posing a statement loud and clear; so much so that the receiver understands it as urgency, subliminal message is an indirect influence of something that may or may not have any significance to the concerned person in real life.

If we study how advertising works, it is either conveying a subliminal message or vice-versa. While a big “SALE” message or “Buy One, Get 1 Free” poster is directly telling us that we should buy a particular product and that we can save money on it too, a subliminal message is often nonexistent, but equally powerful, if not more so.

Imagine a skin-care company launching a new soap range for kids. It wouldn’t actually sell soaps, because who would buy soap just like that? The company would sell love, care, responsible motherhood and ‘earthly minerals’ to their consumers and that is exactly what sublime messages do to human brain. They can tamper with your thought processes and may alter your decisions altogether.

Practicality can work as long as there is no hindrance in your emotional structure. And once your emotions are at stake, you often lose all and any capacity to think of viable solutions. Think of it this way- If you’re really upset with a friend and you decide to not talk to that person again, you are actually making a pragmatic decision about something or someone. Now imagine their birthday falls a week after the fight. You are still upset, but you think of their birthday as their “special day” and you end up wishing them. The day they were born is nothing but an automated and natural sublime message to you that you should be warm towards them!

A man is a social animal first and a rational one later. The global pandemic of 2020 and the quarantine has made people realize how much they crave being around like minded people and how important socializing is.

Subliminal messages can make us emotionally impulsive. The sudden announcement of lockdown made people panic buy a lot of things. It wasn’t mentioned that people would not be able to buy regular, important necessities. But the thought of getting locked up in the house sent a signal to people that they might not get food, they might die of hunger, they might go out of important things and hence the impulse to survive dawned upon people.

To conclude it all, a subliminal message prompts us to make certain decisions, shapes our thought processes and may tempt us into situations we rationally wouldn’t end up in.

Oh, did I mention that sales are scam?
